BFF signs 'historical deal'

Update : 15 Jun 2016, 06:32 PM

Bangladesh Football Federation yesterday signed a Memorandum of Understanding with Saif Global Sports Limited, a sister concern of Saif Powertec Limited.

As per the five-year agreement, Saif Global Sports will sponsor the Bangladesh Premier League, starting from this season, and provide Tk40m (4 crore) each year for the marketing and branding rights of the top-flight.

Saif Global Sports is also likely to introduce a new format for the BPL.

The MoU signing ceremony between the two parties took place at Hotel Radisson in the capital yesterday where BFF president Kazi Salahuddin and Saif Powertec managing director Tarafder Ruhul Amin signed on the dotted line on behalf of their respective organisations.

Salahuddin termed the signing a “historical deal” and went on to inform that the league will be held at five different venues for the first time ever in the country's history.

“This is a new concept. We have been trying to decentralise football across the country. To develop the game, it's not possible to hold the league in only one venue,” said Salahuddin yesterday.

Saif Global Sports chairman Tarafder on the other hand said, “We are going to host 110 (out of a total of 132) matches outside the capital which means the people from the division and district levels can be involved with the premier league.”

Deputy minister for youth and sports Arif Khan Joy pledged to provide the best possible assistance on behalf of the government and said all the venues will be ready before the kick off date – July 15.
