Treat your baby to some hydrotherapy

An easy fix for us adults when we’re low on energy and in need of some relaxation is going to the spa of our choice, and be pampered in a way that can leave a mark for weeks to come. But what about the little ones? HydroBaby comes to aid as the first ever baby spa in Bangladesh, specializing in hydrotherapy and baby massages, for the ultimate experience for your offsprings.

What is hydrotherapy?

Hydrotherapy is a renowned method of using water for muscle relaxation and building strength. As effective as it is for adults suffering from arthritis or other rheumatic struggles, it is an efficient tool for babies and toddlers. Babies are seen to be quite comfortable in water, since they spend time swimming around in their mothers’ bellies before they’re brought out to the world. Hydrotherapy assists them to float independently, and grow their confidence in and around water.

But the benefits don’t just end there; studies have shown that this particular kind of therapy can help growing babies and toddlers in a multitude of ways. It improves their balance as well as increases strength, what with the moving and tossing around of their limbs in the water. Additionally, their sleeping patterns, hunger and digestion are also improved. Overall, hydrotherapy aids to develop a baby’s cognitive skills and ensures overall well-being.

How was HydroBaby born?

Considering hydrotherapy and its benefits are still unheard of for the majority of the country, the availability of a one of its kind baby spa and wellness centre comes as a blessing most parents didn’t even know they needed. We sat down with the founders of HydroBaby, Syeda Shabiba Ali and Saifur Rahman, to find out how they devised the plan of this establishment and helped it come to fruition.

It all started when Shabiba and Saifur, parents to a beautiful little girl Aishah, came back to Bangladesh. While living overseas, they had taken their daughter to a baby spa, where they had noticed how well Aishah responded to and played in the water. They also saw a significant improvement in her development, and that she was a lot more relaxed overall. This positive outcome left no doubt in their minds that they’d be taking her back for more sessions. However, after their return to Dhaka, the lack of any such facilities seemed concerning. Aishah, also, seemed to miss her time in the water. So after consulting with other parents, some research, and a whole lot of determination to provide better care for their child as well as others’, HydroBaby was formed.

HydroBaby started operations in October, 2018. Before starting this new venture, Shabiba received formal training in hydrotherapy and massages from International Association of Infant Massage (IAIM), Indonesia. IAIM is a renowned institute dedicated to baby massage and care, with chapters in over 70 countries across the globe. Shabiba completed the Certified Infant Massage Instructor (CIMI) training, and passed on the training to her employees at HydroBaby. With sufficient knowledge and expertise in the matter, Shabiba and Saifur stepped into the world of baby care.

HydroBaby offers services for babies aged from 2 months old to toddlers aged 4. Each of the sessions is usually about an hour long, where the babies are made to float in enjoyably warm, sterile water using a flotation device, followed by a soft tissue technique massage. The device enables otherwise restricted movement of the baby, and the massage afterwards relaxes them after what can only be considered an intense workout session. Some babies are instantly taken by the water, while others take a little bit longer to warm up. HydroBaby also has a play area, where the children can plan and get comfortable before the therapy session begins.

Starting from the entry to the therapy room, everything at HydroBaby is set up in a way that creates a soothing yet fun environment for the babies. With pops of bright colours and toys to grab their interest, it’s a place where any child can be made to feel at ease. They currently have one therapy room, but will soon be expanding to accommodate more mini-clients. Each of the rooms houses a large special indoor pool, with temperature control and colourful lights to keep the babies interested and entertained. They also have up to 4 massage stations in the room, as well as a private section at the back for breast-feeding. Often, the parents accompany their babies in the therapy room, and it has also been known to improve the child’s relationship with their parents.

“We prioritize hygiene above all,” declared Saifur. “The water we use is purified, sterile, and completely free of any form of chemicals. It is also heated to suit the

baby's needs.” The products used at HydroBaby, like the massage oil, are from Mustela, and they are organic, hypoallergenic, and made from natural ingredients. They provide all the essentials for the sessions, such as towels, swim diapers, etc, so parents needn’t worry about what to take with them.

“The response has been enormous, considering we didn’t really actively advertise HydroBaby,” Shabiba stated. “The clientele has grown simply through word of mouth – and word travels fast amongst mommy groups, especially when it comes to their babies’ health. Many people have returned with their babies, after they saw substantial development in their babies after the first session.”

Of course, it may not always be feasible for parents to take their kids to the spa frequently – it’s not a luxury even babies have. For this, Shabiba also gives parents some tips and tricks on how to massage their babies at home, for a more complete experience. This way, the knowledge is spread wider, ensuring better health of the babies across the city.

Hydrotherapy has, needless to say, a myriad of rewards in store for your babies, and HydroBaby is here as a medium, to make sure your babies get that extra care that they deserve. It is an appointment based service, and they remain open from 11am to 6pm every day, with the last session beginning at 5pm. It is recommended that babies are taken for a session once or twice a week. Each session is valued at Tk1700, but there are attractive packages that parents can opt for. For 3 sessions taken any day within a month, there will be a 10 percent discount, while for 5 sessions over the course of 2 months, there be a 20 percent discount on the total cost.

So take your baby and treat him/her to a relaxing and highly beneficial therapy session at HydroBaby. If you don’t have a little one of your own, when will the nephews and nieces be of better use? Not only will it help the babies in immense ways, but it sure is a treat to watch those little bundles of joy floating around and flapping their little limbs in the water. I assure you, it’ll be worth it.
