There has been persistent heavy rainfall in several Sunamganj upazilas for the past four days, causing flash floods to sweep these low lying areas on Friday.
The affected areas are the Sadar upazila, Bishwamvarpur upazila, Tahirpur upazila, Jamalganj upazila, and Dharmapasha upazila
Since the last 24 hours, these areas—primarily Bishwamvarpur upazila—recorded a rainfall of around 415mm.
The Surma River—the origin of the flood—is currently 83 centimetres above the danger level. The river level is at about 7.2 metres on an average day.
Executive Officer Shyamol Biswas of Bishwamvarpur upazila, on Friday, said: “A sudden flash flood and rain have water-logged the village roads, causing difficulties for commuters.”
“The administration has taken all the necessary measures, and is ready to provide all sorts of help and support, whenever required," the official added.
Major roads in the affected areas are flooded, causing a great deal of trouble for the commuters. These roads have started to get damaged, and are developing potholes.
Private and government institutions alike have been flooded in the affected areas. Life has come to a standstill.
Bishwamvarpur upazila UNO Samir Biswas said: “Mass people are not severely affected yet. We are hopeful with the preparations taken by the district administration.”
Disaster management included, swiftly forming medicals teams, control rooms, reaching people in need, and constantly monitoring the water level in all affected areas, he added.
