The Food Talk awards
The restaurant boom that began in the 90’s in Bangladesh, coupled with the rise of corporations and increase in traffic jams have seen a major paradigm shift in the culture of dining out. What was once an occasional treat has become almost a daily activity. Hangouts and meetings have shifted from drawing rooms and boardrooms to a wide array of restaurants and cafes. The new restaurants popping up everywhere in Dhaka has also given rise to crowd-sourcing of restaurant reviews and foodie discussions on the web. And what better medium for the people to interact than Facebook?
Taskin Rahman, who once reviewed restaurants for different publications and TripAdvisor, decided to make his own group for like minds to review and discuss all things gastronomical. With the overall goal of improving the food experience in Bangladesh, by creating a group of food enthusiasts, #TheFoodTalk started in 2014 by organizing key aficianados to come together and discuss new and interesting food but also appreciate the traditional dishes. The group is comprised of enthusiasts as well as restaurant owners and people from the media so that there is a good balance and mutual respect for each other.
On May 22, #TheFoodTalk organized a meeting of 30 people, to identify the best halim and jilapi during the month of Ramadan. Over 2 weeks, the group identified well-known places for halim and jilapi and awarded the groups choice through a process. The group identified the most popular place for halim is Decent, which also bagged the Critic’s Award . The Critic’s award for jilapi went to Khazana, but it was Tarka that received the popular vote.
#TheFoodTalk aspires to create a series of such awards recognizing the variety and the vibrancy of food in Bangladesh and Bangla food. The event was sponsored by Shohoz
