The Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) have arrested two active members, including a female, of banned militant outfit Ansar al-Islam for their alleged involvement in recruiting new members by luring them with love and marriage through social media.

The arrestees are Jannatul Nayema, 22, and Afzal Hossain, 23.

Nayema was arrested from Barisal town on early Tuesday and Afzal was nabbed from Dhaka’s Demra area in the morning. Extremist books and mobile phones were recovered from their possession.

“We had information that a young woman named Safia Akhter Tanzi, 22, went missing from Chittagong's metropolitan area on June 26 for unknown reasons. Following her disappearance, we began a shadow investigation and increased our surveillance,” RAB Director (Legal and Media Wing) Lt Col Emranul Hasan said while addressing a press briefing at RAB Media Centre in Karwan Bazar on Tuesday evening.

“Later, acting on a tip-off, a team from RAB-2 raided a madrasa in the Barisal metropolitan area where they arrested Ansar al-Islam member Jannatul Nayema and rescued Safia.”

“Based on the information gleaned from Jannatul, RAB conducted another drive in Dhaka’s Demra area on the same day, and arrested Afzal, another active member of outlawed militant outfit,” he added.

The RAB official said during primary interrogation, the two accused admitted that they brought Safia from Chittagong to Barisal by luring her with a promise to get her married to her boyfriend. Safia did not know that her so-called boyfriend was a part of their plan.

He said Safia, an under-graduate student, used to live with her family in Chittagong. She was introduced to a group of men and women, including Jannatul, through facebook.

Then, Jannatul added Safia to a facebook closed group where she met Saiful alias Saif. Soon, the two formed a relation and Saif convinced her to come to Barisal and get married to him.

On June 26, Safia left the home with Jannatul for Barisal. However, instead of getting married, Saif admitted Safia to a madrasa and continued to convince her to join their militant activities.

Arrested Afzal has been involved with the banned militant outfit for a long time and has been acting as the outfit’s organiser in Dhaka, the RAB official informed.
