1 held with 9kg gold at Dhaka airport

Custom Intelligence officials have detained a person with 9.278kg of gold worth Tk4.6cr from Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport in Dhaka. Detainee Shirajul Islam, 41, arrived at the airport on a Bangkok Airways flight on Wednesday 10pm.Customs Intelligence and Investigation Directorate’s (CIID) Director General (Media) Dr Moinul Khan said:  “Acting on a tip-off, we challenged Shirajul while he was crossing immigration area’s green channel. “At first he denied having any gold with him, but later he confessed about hiding the gold bars in his body. After searching his body, Customs intelligence officials recovered the gold bars taped on his legs beneath his socks, Moinul said. He said: “We recovered nine gold bars weighting 1kg each and few broken pieces of another gold bar containing 278 grams.” Shirajul, who has travelled abroad 13 times within last six months, wrapped five gold bars in his right leg and four in his left leg. Shiraj was detained and was handed over to the Airport police. “We are preparing to legally deposit the seized gold in Bangladesh Bank,” Moinul added.
