Vehicle breakdowns, crashes slow traffic on Jamuna Bridge highway

Law enforcement officials said efforts were underway to ease congestion on the highway

Update : 26 May 2026, 09:50 AM

Heavy traffic pressure, vehicle breakdowns and road accidents on the Jamuna Bridge caused slow movement on a 15-kilometre stretch of the Dhaka-Tangail-Jamuna Bridge highway on Tuesday.

Traffic remained slow from the Jamuna Bridge area to Pungli since Tuesday morning, causing suffering for Eid holidaymakers, particularly women, children and elderly passengers.

Police said they were working to ease congestion on the highway.

Syed Riaz Uddin, executive engineer of the Jamuna Bridge Site Office, said a long queue of vehicles formed following a storm, during which several vehicles broke down and multiple accidents occurred on the bridge.

“As a result, traffic movement on the highway became slower,” he said.

According to him, 11 vehicles broke down on the bridge since midnight Monday.

On Tuesday morning, four vehicles were involved in crashes on the northbound lane of the Jamuna Bridge.

Recovery operations using wreckers were underway, further slowing traffic movement, he added.

Md Saree, in charge of the Elenga Highway Police outpost, said the breakdowns and accidents on the bridge led to slow traffic up to the Pungli area.

“Police members are working tirelessly to restore normal traffic movement on the highway,” he said.
