A Rohingya man has been detained for reportedly trying to get a Bangladeshi passport concealing his identity.

Officials of Chittagong Divisional Passport and Visa Office detained Shafiul Hi and handed him over to Double-Mooring police station in Chittagong on Thursday.

The Rohingya man submitted all necessary documents for the passport but forged his identity.

Director of Chittagong Divisional Passport and Visa Office Abu Sayeed said they were on alert so that the Rohingyas do not get Bangladeshi passports.

“We began to question the suspect after being suspicious about his identity. At one stage of interrogation, Shafiul confessed that he was from Bolibazar of Myanmar," he said.

Shafiul along with his family crossed over to Bangladesh in 2014. Later, he stayed at a camp in Cox’s Bazar's Teknaf upazila.

He fled from the camp and went to Fatikchhari upazila. Shafiul mentioned Abdullahpur area of Fatikchhari upazila under Chittagong as his address in the passport application, the official added.

CMP Assistant Commissioner (Double-Mooring Zone) Md Ashiqur Rahman said they were trying to to unmask those, who helped Rohingyas get passports with fake documents.
