DMP: Old, risky vehicles to face crackdown in Dhaka

Vehicle owners, drivers, and relevant stakeholders have been urged not to operate expired and risky vehicles on the roads

Update : 07 May 2026, 12:53 PM

The Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) has announced a special drive to stop the movement of old, rickety, and unsafe vehicles that have exceeded their economic lifespan within the metropolitan area.

The traffic division of the DMP said that strict legal action—including fines and vehicle dumping—will be taken against such unfit vehicles if they continue to operate.

In a public notice signed by Acting DMP Commissioner, Md Sarwar, it was stated that some old and hazardous buses and freight vehicles are still operating in Dhaka city. These vehicles frequently break down on roads, flyovers, and bridges, causing severe traffic congestion. This is increasing public suffering and seriously disrupting road safety.

The notice further said that regular drives will be conducted in Dhaka city to ensure safe and smooth movement of the public by taking action against vehicles that have exceeded their economic lifespan.

According to a notification issued by the Bangladesh Road Transport Authority (BRTA) on May 17, 2023, the economic life of buses and minibuses is set at 20 years, while for trucks, covered vans, and other freight vehicles, it is 25 years.

The DMP has warned that any vehicle exceeding this limit and operating in Dhaka city will face legal action through special drives conducted jointly by traffic police and executive magistrates.

Vehicle owners, drivers, and relevant stakeholders have also been urged not to operate expired and risky vehicles on the roads.
