Udayan School vice principal suspended over uniform row

Authorities of Udayan School and College suspended the school’s vice-principal who cut the full-sleeves of several senior students because it violated the school’s dress code for uniforms.

Dr AAMS Arefin Siddique, the school’s governing body’s president, announced the suspension of Mahbuba Khanam Kalpona at a meeting on Sunday night. He recommended a committee should be formed to investigate the allegations about the incident.

The suspension came after guardians began demonstrating in front of the school demanding the removal of the school’s principal Umme Salema Begum, and vice-principal Mahbuba Khanam Kalpona, wife of Labour and Employment Minister Rajiuddin Ahmed Raju.

According to students, on May 22 the vice-principal and two other teachers cut the full-sleeves of at least 50 students’ uniforms during a tiffin break. The students mostly from classes IX and XI were in violation of the school uniform code.

However, Ruhul Amin, a guardian who is a member of the governing body, said they were not satisfied with only suspension for the vice-principal.

Monday morning guardians formed a human chain in front of the school and continued to demand the dismissal of both the principal and the vice-principal of the school. Guardians said they did not think their children were in safe hands after such an incident occurred under principal

Salema Begum’s administration. They announced they would wear black-badges today and continue to protest to press for their demands.
