Quader: BNP will contest next election to safeguard party registration

Update : 04 Mar 2017, 11:35 AM
Awami League General Secretary Obaidul Quader has said BNP will take part in the next parliamentary election to avert the risk of losing its party registration for not participating in the national polls twice. According to the Representation of the People Order (RPO), if any registered party does not take part in the national election two consecutive times then their registration will be cancelled. "As per the constitution, BNP cannot even be a part of the election-time government,” Quader said. Separately, BNP Standing Committee Member Lt General (Retd) Mahbubur Rahman said the party would contest the polls on principle. “BNP will participate in next elections as it believes that the election is a part of democracy (and) BNP has also contributed to the democracy of Bangladesh,” he said. Quader, also the road transport and bridges minister, used Friday's statement to announce that councils for every affiliated body of the ruling party will be held shortly. The Mohila Awami League council will be held on Saturday. Quader also said the party has decided to excuse and reinstate the primary membership of those who were expelled for violations of discipline before the last council. “These members, however, will not be reinstated to their previous posts,” he said. Referring to the Comilla City Corporation election, he said: “We have to work together to ensure victory in the Comilla election in the same way we achieved victory in the Narayanganj polls, by putting aside internal feuds.”
