DU student killed in road accident in Cox's Bazar

A postgraduate student of Dhaka University (DU) was killed in a head-on collision between an easybike and a car on the Marine Drive in Cox's Bazar on Thursday. Cox's Bazar Additional Superintendent of Police Md Afrozul Haque Tutul confirmed the matter to the Dhaka Tribune on Thursday. The deceased, Shammi Khanam Tania, 24, was studying masters in development studies at DU, sources said. Her husband, Ahsanul Kabir, who was with her during the accident, is assistant commissioner at the Customs, Excise and VAT Commissionerate in Dhaka. Both Ahsan and the easybike driver were injured in the accident. The easybike driver could not be identified immediately. Speaking of the incident, Assistant Superintendent of Police Tutul said Tania and Ahsan flew to Cox's Bazar from Dhaka on Thursday afternoon for a vacation. The couple took an easybike from Cox's Bazar airport to go to Mermaid Eco Resort located near the Reju River in Ramu upazila. “They were travelling through the Cox's Bazar-Teknaf Marine Drive. When they reached Himchhari area in Ramu, A Toyota Noah van, coming at high speed from the opposite side, hit the easybike head-on,” said Tutul. “The Noah driver fled the scene immediately after the collision. Locals rescued the couple and the easybike driver and rushed them to Cox's Bazar General Hospital, where the on-duty doctors pronounced Tania dead.” Her body is currently in the hospital morgue, the police official added.
