Progressive Students’ Alliance protests against Chhatra League’s attack on their leaders

Progressive Students’ Alliance, on Wednesday brought out a procession at Dhaka University (DU) protesting the ruling party’s student wing Bangladesh Chhatra League’s (BCL) attacks on their activists across the country during nationwide strike on January 29. An alliance of 11 left-leaning students’ organizations brought out the procession from Madhur Canteen and ended at the premises of Dhaka University Central Student's Union (DUCSU). Addressing the rally, Chhatra Union General Secretary Liton Nandi said: “Chhatra League activists are repeatedly attacking our activists and general students to create anarchy on campus and continue their terrorist activities”. “Students will resist their desperate acts of violence and our demonstration cannot be suppressed by attacks or legal intimidation.” Among others, Chhatra Federation General Secretary Jahid Sujon, Samajtantrik Chhatra Front President Naima Khaled Monika and DU unit Chhatra Union President Tuhin Kanti Das were present at the rally. On January 23, several hundred BCL activists swooped in on a group of demonstrators comprising of both general students and activists of left leaning student organization to rescue DU Vice Chancellor Professor M Akhtaruzzaman from the protesters in front of his office. At least 30 demonstrators and several campus based journalists were injured during the attack.
